The duration of the lifecycle of Dictyocaulus viviparus is about 4 weeks from the ingestion of larvae to the excretion of infective larvae by the affected animal. In optimal conditions large quantities (millions) of infective larvae can be produced and contaminate pastures.

Day 0
Infective larvae (L3) ingested.

Day 7
L4 migrate through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream and to the lungs

Day 12-14
L5 (immature adults) move to upper respiratory tract. L5 can over-winter in carrier hosts. Immunity established/active at this stage

Day 15-21
After 1 week on pasture, L2 become infective L3. Larvae scattered by fungus/rain. May over-winter on pasture in some circumstances

Day 25
Eggs containing L1 are coughed up and swallowed by the infected animal, eggs hatch out L2.
L2 excreted in faeces.

Day 28
After 1 week on pasture, L2 become infective L3. Larvae scattered by fungus/rain. May over-winter on pasture in some circumstances.
